Warp Drive: 2D Art Final

Reina Starlight is the Captain of the starship, The Nova, a small vessel in the massive United Earth Navy fleet. Accompanied by her wits, her ship, and her Artificial Intelligence Unit, Sam, Reina returns to her ship from a long and taxing mission. For this project, we were assigned to gather a load of reference photos, create 10 thumbnails, and refine one of those thumbnails in addition to a character concept piece to create a final illustration.

Final Piece

In this sketch, I wanted to give Reina a sense of loneliness as she stands alone in a sad position while she thinks in a large briefing room set to fit several others that are mysteriously missing. I attempted with this version of Reina to streamline her armor so it doesn't seem like a walking tank but instead a lot more agile and mobile.I also wanted to make an angular piece because points and spikes seem to indicate a dark and aggressive science fiction future.

Character Concept Art

For this sketch of Reina, I tried to make her armor seem a bit bulkier in vital areas of the body and parts of the body that would be commonly hit by laser fire or hit in close quarters combat. After this additional character drawing and idea for her armor, I think I prefer the original design for the armor. This version makes the character bulkier than originally intended when the character is supposed to be slender and agile.

Initial Reina Sketches

Reina Starlight is a newly minted captain of the United Earth Navy. Though she's a captain, she was promoted during combat and thus she didn't have a typical officer's training. Her personality reflects that in her speech and actions. She's got quite a bit of snark and sass while also maintaining a very intelligent and getting commendations for excellent strategy. She is described as

"She's about 5-foot 4-inches and Caucasian. Her black United Earth Navy armor was outlined with a gold paint. She had a soft curvy face with a pointed chin and brown eyes. Her hair wasn't buzz cut like the other soldier's, instead, it was shaved on the side with the rest of her long hair is pulled back into a high ponytail. Her hair was blonde with pale blue tips. Finally, over her left breast was a badge saying 'Cpt. Starlight'"

Her unorthodox persona also comes across with the fact that she  has dyed hair tips, something most wouldn't captains wouldn't do. Meanwhile her armor is designated as 'Class C Aires Armor.' It is described as:

"Designed in an undisclosed research facility, the Class C Aries Armor suit is built to withstand up to 1000 pounds of force, the vacuum of space, any small arms fire, and have mild stealth capabilities. "

And because of this description I decided to go with darkly colored armor that covered vital areas while still allowing for mobility by reducing armor at some key joints. And because the armor is described as being vacuum sealed for space movement, I added in a skin suit so that it would make practical sense. The helmet however, I drew inspiration from a ODST helmets from 'Halo' and the character from the box art of the game 'Cry Havoc.' Image references for the character are at the bottom of the page.

Interior Concept Art

Once I had the general outline of what I wanted for the drawing I started thinking of reasonable additions that would help the piece look more full but at the same time wouldn't be very distracting. Adding guide rails to the platform made the illustration get a more organized feel to it. I also added wedges to look like points of structure as well as act as a frame for the middle third of the illustration. To make the room seem more practical I added a couple more screens, one at the center console at the end of the room and one at the side console. I also tried to extrapolate the pipes in the top part of the room making the architexture feel more practical than aesthetic.

Refined Thumbnail

I chose this thumbnail to enhance because of the uniqueness of the shape. I like this view of a platform over two lower walkways, I find it very cool and adding cool visual options and a the lines give a great method of directing the attention of the view. After drastically cleaning the lines and refining ideas I had when first creating the piece.

I wanted to do a variety of different versions of how the room or area would lay out. The briefing room has several key points that I tried to vary between all of the iterations of the area. A holographic table is one of the key aspects and so in most of the sketches it makes an appearance with a variety of different methods of projection. Sometimes its like a projector forming in mid air, sometimes it forms from the light of the table below it. Additionally I didn't want walls to be completely clear so I tried to add wedges, consoles, columns, and windows to make even the the walls interesting. At the same time in the windows I didn't want it to be dead space or a generic star field so I instead decided to try to add an interesting black hole as something to grab attention. I also wanted to think about other other locations that could potentially be the focus of this piece and so I tried a corridor, an airlock and the cockpit of the ship.

The dark grays with the bright blues and pale white were chosen to add a sense of light and dark to give the piece a sense of a dichotomy. In the story that I wrote that these drawings are based on, I try to make the world a dark place with the main character acting as the shining light for others. The orange of the holograms would be used to directly contrast the blue of the computer screens.
